Monitor Your Pet With A Camera While You're Away

If you have a dog or cat and you want to keep tabs on their activity when you're not at home, a camera is a great way to check in on them and see what they're up to. You can use a small camera to watch your pet remotely so you will know their habits and see what they're doing at the push of a button. Here is a guide to help you set up your own personal "pet spy" camera so you can always keep an eye on your furry friend.

Choose A Camera

An IP camera runs directly through the IP address in your home's network. These cameras are small, easy to set up, and don't require a ton of wiring to install. You can find IP cameras at most big box electronics retailers or online. You can opt to buy several cameras so they can be placed throughout the home, or just install one in the main room where your pet stays when you're at work or away from home. Make sure the IP camera has a pan, tilt, zoom option so you can remotely move it around if you need to follow your pet a bit more. Your camera will work in sync with the video viewing software you install on your tablet, computer, and smart phone.

Using Software

As your pet moves around, the camera will pick up this movement and transmit it to your software. The software will allow you to watch what's happening in real time, and there are phone apps that you can install so you'll be able to see if Fido has gotten into the garbage whenever you need to check up. Make sure that you configure the camera to work with the software and that you set it up to use the remote surveillance option. This option will let you watch over your pet from any other working device that has the same software installed. Simply open up the software at any time and view what is going on in real time as the camera transmits the images through the connected software.

Consider Speakers

Some cameras include microphones and speakers that allow you to transmit sound from the camera. If you have a young puppy or kitten who is dealing with separation anxiety or other issues, this can be especially helpful. You will be able to talk into your cell phone, and your voice will emit from the camera. It's a great addition for pet owners who want to be able to talk to their pet remotely and observe their reaction to their voice. When you use a remote camera to monitor your pet, it can help with training and give you an idea of the things you might be able to change so your pet will be comfortable and behave when no one is home.
