Most self storage facilities work hard to keep rodents out of their units, but you still have to do your part not to attract the pests. This is simply because the facility can only treat the outside of the units. It's up to you to treat inside of your unit. The following tips will make your storage unit unappealing to rodents so you won't have to worry about your stuff when it's stored.
Tip #1: Never store food
Storing any type of food item, whether for animals or humans, is a big no-no. If you must stow some dry foods, make sure they are sealed in plastic bags that are then further sealed in airtight plastic or glass containers. Keep in mind that rodents can and will chew through thin plastic, so only heavy-duty plastic will work. Don't overlook unlikely food sources either. Your child's macaroni art, a canister of bird seed, or an extra tube of toothpaste tossed into a box can be a feast in the eyes of a starving rodent.
Tip #2: Watch out for adhesives
Paste and some glue also attracts rodents because they can feed on it. If art supplies or other types of paste are in your stored boxes, make sure you package them up as you would food – bagged and in an airtight container. This also goes for items that have been coated in the paste, such as scrapbooks or children's school projects.
Tip #3: Clean everything
Kitchen appliances in particular could have food residue or crumbs that attract rodents. Wipe down everything inside and out with a diluted bleach solution. Not only does this get rid of the food, but it also removes any odors that could attract the pests. All dishes should also be washed, as should bathroom items since toothpaste residue could be mistaken as a food source by rodents. Also, wipe down children's toys to remove sticky finger residue, and wash all textiles to remove body oils and food residue.
Tip #4: Bag and box
While clothing and books aren't a food source, they do provide nesting materials. Lining your storage boxes with a plastic bag, packing everything, and then tying the bag closed before taping the box can make these items less tempting to rodents looking for a home. As a side benefit, this also protects the items from moisture.
