If you live in a rural area, you may depend on your own well to provide water for your household. However, you may have noticed lately that the water stream and quality have decreased, leading you to wonder if there could be a problem with the system. If so, look for the following signs that your water well pump may have a crack in it and that the damage is causing serious issues.
1. Water Coming out of Your Faucets Is Dirty
One of the first signs that may lead you to believe that your water well pump is damaged is that the color of the water coming out of your faucets seems off. It may appear cloudy or even dirty. And, when you hold a glass of water up to the light, you can see sediment floating around in the liquid.
Normally, the closed system of the pump allows for filtration of the water, removing any dirt, sediment, and debris from the water before it reaches your house. However, if the pump casing may be cracked, this allows dirt to bypass the filter and contaminate your water.
2. Water Pressure Has Decreased Significantly
Another sign that may alert you to the possibility of a crack in your well pump is that the water pressure has decreased significantly. When the pump is intact, the lines do not allow air to enter the system, helping to keep the pressure within the pump constant and high enough to push the water through your pipes and out of your faucets.
When the pump becomes cracked, air seeps into the pump, which causes a change in its internal pressure. It can also allow water to leak out of the pump, which uses a lot of the pressure up so that it is decreased once it reaches your faucets.
However, there are other possible causes of low water pressure, such as a low water level in the well or even a busted pipe leading from the pump to your house. You will need to have a professional inspect the system to determine the actual cause.
If your pump has a crack in it, it most likely cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced. Contact a business that offers residential water well pump services to have them take a look at your pump to determine whether the issue can be fixed or if you will need to install a new one.
